Irish Plate

“Help Wanted:  No Irish Need Apply” sign. Circa September, 1915.

The Irish immigrants crossed the Atlantic to flee starvation and religious persecution.  What they found when they got to this country was more heartbreak.   “Help Wanted” read the signs.  “No Irish Need Apply”. Although the largest number of Irish immigrated to the United States between 1840 and 1870, they still suffered as a group from prejudice and discrimination in 1915 when this sign was printed.  The discrimination continued despite the large numbers of Irish who were second and third generation Americans.
