News Briefs - Winter 2005-2006
New Additions to Permanent Exhibit
We have two new additions in “A Living Memorial”, the local portion of our permanent exhibit.
As our community shares more personal memories and artifacts, this exhibit will continue to change and grow. Visitors to Hatikvah will always find something new in this ever-growing part of the local portion of our permanent exhibit.
An additional panel features new pre-World War II photos and family histories. These contributions include the families of Josef Friedman, Sidonia Perlstein, Dr. Walter Tauber and Hanna Grunwald Tauber. More information was added to the current panels of the existing stories of George Steinberg, George Torrey, Celine Kisch Ehrlich and Max Berger. A total of 36 local families are now represented in “A Living Memorial”.
A fourth case was added in the hallway alongside the existing three artifact cases. Hatikvah is recognized by experts in the field as a first-class exhibit because of our growing collection of unique pictures and rare artifacts.
To share your own family history or pre-World War II artifacts, please contact Rabbi Robert Sternberg, Hatikvah Executive Director, at (413) 734-7701.
New Hatikvah Board Officers
At the Hatikvah Board meeting on December 15, 2005, the Nominating Committee presented a new slate of officers. Paula Gallup, Ronda Jackowitz, and Liz Rome will serve as board co-chairpersons for the coming year. Barry Shulman will serve as chairman emeritus.
Paula will chair the Docent Committee and oversee all of the center’s interfaith activities. Chairing the Friends/Members Campaign, Ronda will also head the community Yom HaShoah program. Liz will lead the Permanent Exhibit Committee as well as publicize and create features for our Website.
School Groups Visit Permanent Exhibit
Exhibit Hours: Monday-Thursday, 9am-5pm, Friday 9am-3pm, Sunday 10am-4pm “Beyond Genocide” Exhibit on display through January 13, 2006.
The school tour season got off to a busy start with visits from Elms College, Springfield College, Camp Interfaith, the Longmeadow Book Club, and Sinai Temple Religious School.
On January 11 and 13, approximately 200 eighth grade students from Williams and Glenbrook Middle Schools in Longmeadow will tour “A Reason to Remember”. The students will also participate in a learning exercise about understanding genocide with Amy Fagin, the artist and creator of “Beyond Genocide”.
This spiritually compelling exhibit is on display in the Jewish Community Center Lounge until January 13. If you have not yet seen this exhibit, please stop by. It is a unique and moving experience.
