Artifacts: Personalizing History
November 5, 2006

A cap worn by a concentration camp inmate, a last birthday card sent from
Germany to a niece in South Africa, a wedding picture of long lost relatives,
a number torn from a concentration camp uniform. These possessions
were protected, concealed and often saved under extraordinary circumstances. When
the witnesses themselves are no longer here to tell their stories, these artifacts
will be all that is left to speak for them.
Artifacts become increasingly more important with each passing year. By
preserving the history of the Holocaust, artifacts are a living legacy that
can determine what kind of world we will leave to our children and grandchildren.
Hatikvah Holocaust Education Center received well over 100 additional artifacts during the summer and fall of 2006 and created new spaces to display them. The official opening for the new artifacts added to our permanent exhibit, “A Reason to Remember” was held at an Open House on November 5, 2006.
