Yom HaShoah     April 24, 2006      Remembering Dutch Jewry

A community service took place on April 24, 2006 at Temple Beth El in Springfield at 7:30 p.m.

The service was part of a series of activities and programs co-sponsored by Hatikvah, the National Yiddish Book Center and underwritten by the Harold Grinspoon Supporting Foundation. The theme of this collaborative venture was Dutch Jewry.

The program featured music written by Dutch Jewish composers who perished in the Holocaust.  Most of the work was composed in the 1930’s just prior to the Nazi occupation of Holland.  The musicians who performed were Eleanore Pameijer and Marcel Worms, both of Amsterdam.

Celine Ehrlich, formerly of Springfield and now living in California was a special guest at the program.   Some of her personal artifacts can be seen at the permanent exhibit at Hatikvah.

In addition to the concert, there was a candle lighting ceremony, music by Cantor Stephen Berke of Beth El Temple and the Makhela Choir and traditional memorial prayers.
