Life Reborn: Remembering the Displaced Persons Camp

CandleA community memorial service took place on Sunday, April 15, 2007 at Sinai Temple.  Hannah Pearlstein Marcus who was born in Bergen Belsen Displaced Persons Camp and Irving Schild who was interred at Fort Ontario in Oswego, New York were featured speakers.

Fort Ontario was the only refugee camp created by the Untied States government. 982 refugees were brought there from Europe in 1944 as U.S. War Refugee Board rescue effort.  There was an understanding that these refugees would return to Europe after World War II ended. However, most of them stayed in the United States.

The program also featured music by the Makhela Choir and the Sinai Temple Choir.  There was a candle lighting ceremony and traditional memorial prayers were recited.
