“Sister
Rose’s Passion” is a very small movie about a very big subject.
The 38 minute documentary explores the story of Sister Rose Thering, a
Dominican nun who devoted her life to battling anti-Semitism in the Catholic
Church. In addition to teaching and lecturing for over 50 years, her writings
contributed to the creation of Nostra Aetate, the revolutionary document
that changed the church’s position on Jews. A professor
at Seton Hall University, she was also instrumental in passing a bill that
made Holocaust education mandatory in New Jersey.
This film was the winner of Best Documentary Short at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival and nominated for an Academy Award in 2005.
Following the film, there was a panel discussion led by Rabbi Robert Sternberg, Hatikvah Holocaust Education Center; Martin Pion, Professor of Theology and World Religions, Elms College; and Paula Gallup, Lay Pastoral Assistant, St. Andrews Church, Longmeadow.
