Jackie Robinson: Breaking the Color Barrier - 2000
When Branch Rickey first met with Jackie Robinson about joining the Brooklyn Dodgers, he told him that for three years he would have to turn the other cheek and silently suffer the taunts, offensive gestures, hate mail and other vile things that would come his way.
Jackie had to be bigger than life. He had to be bigger than his Brooklyn team mates who petitioned to keep him off the team, bigger than pitchers who threw at him, base runners who tried to spike him, fans who mocked him; bigger than people who hollered at him to carry their bags.
Through everything, Jackie had the strength to suppress his instincts and to sacrifice his pride for his people. It was an incredible act of selflessness that in the end brought the races closer together and shaped the dreams of an entire generation.
This exhibit was co-sponsored by the Jewish Community Center and Hatikvah Holocaust Education Center and drew thousands of visitors from the area.
