A Reason to Remember Roth,Germany 1933-1942 |

“A Reason to Remember” tells the personal stories of five families who lived in the tiny village of Roth, Germany in 1933, the year Hitler became chancellor. This unique exhibit illustrates how the relations between these families and their neighbors were systematically dismantled by the Nazi rule.
Through the use of artifacts, photographs, documents and personal video testimonies, visitors are able to understand the magnitude of the crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Nazi regime. What happened in Roth was a microcosm of what occurred throughout Nazi occupied Europe.
By remembering Roth, visitors will learn how hatred and discrimination destroyed the lives of innocent people.

Holocaust Survivor Families |

This portion of the permanent exhibit honors the Holocaust survivors who settled in Western Massachusetts. It contains pictures and stories of relatives of these survivors who perished in the Holocaust. We remember these people because they were family and because their lives ended tragically and prematurely. We remember the Holocaust not only to memorialize the lives lost, but also to learn from history and combat prejudice and hatred.
The Center is seeking more stories about survivors, liberators, rescuers who have family members living in the area. Please email stories to administrator@hatikvah-center.org or call (413) 734-7700.

View the original 17 panels (in German) that became the basis for "A Reason to Remember"

In 1996 a group of interested citizens in the vicinity of Roth, Germany created an exhibit consisting of 17 black and white panels that told the stories of the lives and fates of the Jewish families that lived there before World War II. This exhibit was created as part of a commemorative ceremony for the re-dedication of the synogogue in Roth and became the basis for "A Reason To Remember". A copy of this original 17 panels (in German) is available for viewing by appointment.
