The workshops will take place in the Cohen Center at Keene State College from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A Registration fee of $30 is required for each workshop. (Sept. 27 fee is $45.)

September 27: Irving Roth, "May the Lessons of Yesterday Guide our Tomorrows”.  
Irving Roth is a survivor of Auschwitz and Buchenwald and is currently the Director of Holocaust Resource Center at Temple Judea in Manhasset, NY. His memoir, Bondi's Brother chronicles the experiences of two teenage brothers and their struggle to survive the Nazi Holocaust. The author is the 17-year-old of the story. The workshop will present ways to engage students through memoirs.   

October 20:  Rescue & the Righteous
Presented by classroom teachers who are Fellows of the Cohen Center and the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous, this workshop will use the Jewish foundation for the Righteous’ eight “Traits that Transcend” to introduce students to the subject of rescue during the Holocaust. Rescue will be placed in its historical context while approaching the question of how these people did what they did to save Jews. Selected rescuers recognized by Yad Vashem as “Righteous Among the Nations” will be using to illustrate each trait A contemporary figure will reinforce how these traits transcend the confines of history.

November 17: Jean Paul Samputu, Rwandan Genocide: Healing Through Music  
Jean Paul Samputu is a survivor of Rwanda’s horrific genocide campaign of 1994. Samputu lost his mother and father, three brothers and a sister. He has worked steadily since that time to help unify and heal his country, through his music and through educating young people around the world about genocide. He is a tireless worker for peace and reconciliation and a unique musical ambassador for the Rwandan people. In 2003 he was awarded the Kora Medal for Best African Traditional artist and arrived on the international music scene in 2004 with his recording Testimony from Rwanda.

February 9:Facing History and Ourselves, “Reckoning with the Past:  An Educator Workshop Exploring Transitional Justice”

What does it look like to seek justice and rebuild societies after collective violence?  How do individuals and societies reckon with past conflict and atrocity?  Join Facing History staff and educators as we explore these essential questions through case studies from South Africa, Rwanda, Northern Ireland and Germany.

March 23: Dr. Simon Payaslian, "The Armenian Genocide in a Comparative Perspective."

Dr. Simon Payaslian is the Kaloosdian/Mugar Chair, Armenian Genocide Studies & Modern Armenian History at the Strassler Family Center for Holocaust & Genocide Studies. The workshop will present the causes and consequences  of the Armenian Genocide in a comparative framework and integrate material from other cases in the twentieth century -- for example, the Holocaust, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Rwanda. The analysis will examine such issues as the nature and ideology of the perpetrators/government leadership, the domestic political and economic environment, the international environment,  the extent of participation by the masses in the genocidal process, and the consequences of the genocide.  Finally, the workshop will review the role and significance of genocide recognition and Armenian-Turkish reconciliation.
